Our values and beliefs are central to how we view the world and how we behave. So why do we believe one thing and not another? Sometimes, e.g. in the case of small kids, people can just take on the beliefs of others without really thinking about the issues involved. But as we grow older we tend to develop our own values and beliefs, and are more questioning of the beliefs of others.
When we feel really strongly about something there are a number of things we can do about it. We can get frustrated and angry and shout obscenities at the TV – or we can do something positive like join an environmental, political or religious group.
However strong our views are it’s important to respect the right of other people to believe the exact opposite. This means we shouldn’t try to impose our values on other people, though obviously there’s nothing wrong with engaging in a calm discussion. We should also try and keep as open a mind as possible when listening to others if we are to broaden our own minds. Very few people go through their adult lives without changing important beliefs. So remember that an idea that is ridiculous to you now could, in a few years’ time, be viewed as an absolute certainty.
