According to films and TV the average man spends most of his day fighting, killing, having car chases, drinking heavily and saving the girl before the end credits. This image stereotypes men and doesn’t leave any room for individuality.
It also fails to take into account the fact that traditional roles are changing. More men are now doing jobs that used to be done almost solely by women e.g. nursing, bringing up kids.
Although this is so common that no one really notices it anymore, caring is still rarely shown as being a masculine characteristic. What is important is that masculinity shouldn’t be defined by the media and its stereotypes.
In short it’s probably more healthy to make up our own definition of masculinity as we go along.
