Emergency contraception
If you’ve had sex without using contraception or think your contraception might have failed – the condom slipped off or split there are two emergency methods your partner can use:
- Emergency pills – These should be started within 72 hours (3 days) of having unprotected sex. They are most effective if started within 24 hours of having had sex.
- An IUD ( a device that’s placed inside the woman’s uterus) – this must be fitted within 5 days of having had sex. Although not everyone can get a coil fitted, it’s an invasive procedure and can be uncomfortable. Get your partner to seek advice from a health adviser first.
If your partner can’t visit a GP or a Family Planning Clinic, then a GUM (genito-urinary medicine)/ sexual health clinic or hospital accident and emergency department may be able to help.
Emergency Contraception is now available to women over 16 years from chemists without the need for a prescription.
