Family

When we were kids it was our parents who shaped how we viewed the world.

We’d believe most of what they told us. From the reality of the tooth fairy right up to their insistence that woolly jumpers, scarves and mittens were all items of high fashion.

As we get older we start to question our parents’ beliefs: not only the trivial stuff but more important things like their political views. If these are very different from those of our parents this can lead to conflict.

Being a parent

This can also be tough.

It’s often hard for them to accept that their kids are growing up and are no longer dependent on them. Nevertheless, parents should realise that their children have to make their own mistakes.

Any disagreements can be kept to a minimum if children talk to their parents about what’s happening in their lives.

Both sides need to listen to each other, negotiate and make compromises.
